Orthotics

Orthotics are customised devices that sit underneath the foot and inside the shoe to support and improve foot function and lower leg mechanics.

Orthotics are prescribed after an extensive biomechanical analysis where your Podiatrist has recognised abnormal foot and leg mechanics that are contributing to your injury or imbalance.

One typically uses these in conjunction with an individualised strength and rehabilitation plan to help them reach their goals faster.

Your orthotics are custom designed by your podiatrist to suit your footwear, lifestyle and activity choices.

They are comfortable, slim and tailored to suit your needs. Focusing on function combined with practicality, they can be made from various materials in order to treat your injury or improve the way you move.

What's the difference between Podiatry & Chiropody?

There's no difference between a Podiatrist and Chiropodist... A Podiatrist is just a more modern name. Both of them fix feet!

Before there was a university degree called "Podiatric Medicine", to specialise in the feet, you would need to study Chiropody.

The Chiropody course mainly covered skin and nail issues but I know many Chiropodists who can treat issues inside the feet! Like sports injuries.

The new Podiatry degree has many modules which cover many different areas of medicine icnluding;

- Vascular (blood flow assessment & advice)

- Dermatology (skin and nail)

- Muskuloskeletal (injuries)

- Rheumatology (a specific form of arthritis)

- Neurology (nerve suppy)

- Orthopaedics (joints and bones)

Fun fact... You can set up a practice next to me and call yourself a Podiatrist and you wouldn't be breaking any laws. That will change this year though as the name Podiatrist and Chiropodist will be a legally protected name by becoming regulated under CORU!
