A brief Overview of Ingrown Nails...

Welcome to MyPodiatry Limerick, where we take care of your feet with a smile! I'm Stephen, your friendly neighborhood podiatrist, and today we're going to talk about ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenails can be painful and uncomfortable, but they're also a common problem that many people deal with at some point in their lives. If you're experiencing an ingrown toenail, it's important to seek treatment early to prevent complications.

So, what exactly is an ingrown toenail? An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail grows into the skin surrounding the nail bed. This can cause pain, redness, swelling, and even infection if left untreated.

There are several causes of ingrown toenails, including improper nail trimming, tight shoes, trauma to the toe, and genetic factors. If you have a family history of ingrown toenails, you may be more likely to develop them yourself.

The good news is that there are several treatment options available for ingrown toenails. In mild cases, soaking the foot in warm water and gently pushing the skin away from the nail can help alleviate discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help manage pain.

For more severe cases, a podiatrist may need to perform a minor procedure to remove the ingrown portion of the nail. This procedure is typically done in-office and is relatively quick and painless.

To prevent ingrown toenails from occurring in the first place, it's important to practice good foot hygiene and nail care. This includes wearing shoes that fit properly, trimming your nails straight across, and avoiding cutting your nails too short or too close to the skin.

At MyPodiatry Limerick, we're dedicated to helping you keep your feet healthy and pain-free. If you're experiencing an ingrown toenail or have any other foot concerns, don't hesitate to give us a call and schedule an appointment. We'll be happy to help!
