Do I Need to Wear Orthotics Forever?

Orthotics (The proper way to say it is Foot Orthoses) look quite similar to insoles but they are in fact medical devices which help to improve the mechanics and function of tissues and joints in your feet.

You can think of orthotics like prescriptive glasses, the more you struggle with seeing objects further or closer away will determine the level of correctness you will receive.

Similarly, If you have a headache and take medication which doesn't help... You increase the Dosage... Orthotic prescriptions change depending on the dosage you need.

Functionally, orthotics can correct imbalance and reduce strain or pain in the feet alongside other areas of the body.

They also help with corns... Most of my patients come back every 2 months for corn removal. When I give these patients insoles they don't need to come back for roughly 6 months... Orthotics slow down how fast the corns come back.

However many people are told that orthotics can be for life and that they will need to wear them every single day without fail but what most people don’t know is these facts about orthotics;

  1. Flat feet or pronation is very normal and do not usually require orthotics (what isn't normal is a poorly functioning foot)

  2. Orthotics are usually not for life, in MyPodiatry Limerick orthotics are usually prescribed for a period of 18-36 months. Think of it like a boot for a sprain, you only wear it until the tissue is healed!

  3. Orthotics do not have to be worn everyday

What exactly are orthotics used for?

Orthotics are firstly used to support an injured or weak part of the body which may be causing discomfort, pain or damage. Therefore orthotics are used to address foot pain such as plantar fasciitis, heel pain, pain in the ball of the foot, and heel spurs.

Orthotics are not just for pain within the foot but it can also be used for ankle pain, knee pain and back pain. As many people have started walking, running or have gone back to the gym an increase in knee pain and back pain has taken place.

Orthotics can be used to address ankle ligament strains, achilles tendonitis and help to improve imbalance which could be causing pain within the knee or lower back.

Many people maybe unaware but orthotics can help people suffering with arthritis as the orthotics can help the foot biomechanics can provide a cushion and support to the joints within the foot.

If you are struggling with knee and hip arthritis, orthotics can making walking a little less painful and a lot more enjoyable.

My ethos: Foot Orthoses should ONLY be prescribed by trained healthcare professionals... Most people DONT need them long term... The prescription needs to SUIT your foot...
