Verrucas. Warts on My Foot :(

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

Verruca is not the most beautiful subject to talk about...

However, It must be done!

Imagine, you take off your socks one evening and you feel something strange on the bottom of your foot as your hand crosses it! You use your flexibilty and get a better look... A verruca!!! Weeks go by, the lump of verruca on bottom of your foot grows or spreads, it hurts all the time and seems be getting bigger and bigger. Now it becomes an interesting topic because you want to get rid of it!

Well Stephen at MyPodiatry Foot and Ankle Clinic Limerick is an expert in Verruca. In this blog I want to share with you the different ways to get rid of your painful verruca.

How do I know if I have a Verruca?

A corn is the most common misdiagnosis!

It is very easy to mistake a Verruca for corns or vice versa. Although it can be hard to tell the difference between both a corn and a verruca we know there are two key differences;

  1. Corns are generally painful when pressed but verrucae are usually painful when squeezed. Although, not all verrucae are painful.

  2. The striations (lines) of the skin do not change when a corn is present but in the case of verrucae, they are disrupted and move around the outside of the lesion.

Forget about the black spots, NOT ALL Verruca have them!

What is a Verruca?

A Verruca is a strain of the Human Papilomma Virus (HPV) which develops into a wart that can be found on the bottom of the foot and around the toe area. They usually present in one of two forms:

1. Single large warts

These are as the name suggest single Verruca or warts but you can have more than one or them and they can be on both feet at the same time.

2. Mosaic warts which cover a larger surface area.

They are usually accompanied by overlayinghard skin and may present with black dots in the centre but not always.

Mosaic Verruca

Because verruca spread, some patients can have dozens of verrucas on their feet. Sometimes the bunch really close together and are basically touching. We call these mosaic in presentation.

What causes a verruca?

Verrucae are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which has various different strains and is responsible for other bodily lesions such as cold sores.  It can be passed on from person to person by direct contact. The HPV virus can thrive in moist, warm or damp environments such as changing room floors and communal showers and that's why you often hear people saying they caught it at the swimming pool. It is possible to contract the virus by simply walking on the same floor as someone who already has a verruca, especially if there is a cut or break in the skin which can make it easier for the virus to penetrate.

What are my treatment options?

There are hundreds of treatment options... I've personally had a verruca and had to go through a painful process of removing it... My experience and knowledge helped me find one of the best treatments on the market.

MyPodiatry Foot & Ankle Clinic Limerick makes treating a verruca a very simple and pain free process...

There are lots of “old wives tales” of treating a verruca, ranging from rubbing a banana on it, dipping the Verruca into a ‘Verruca Well’. While these are gret stories there are more effective ways to treat verruca.

2. Over the Counter Remedies … Nope!

The first port of call for many people is to use an over the counter treatment from the pharmacy, such as a cream, gel or freeze spray. These are usually painfully slow and should be used if you have loads of patience and a steady hand.  These over the counter verruca treatments can also cause more problems than the verruca if not used correctly. One of my patients ended up developing an ulcer... We had to redress it twice a week for 4 weeks because of inappropriately using over the counter treatments.

2. Freezing Your Verruca – Cryotherapy. Painful...

This is the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze the Verruca in an attempt to trigger an immune response. This can be quite painful depending on the location of the lesion and is something we avoid in MyPodiatry Limerick when treating Verruca.

I used this treatment on myself before... Not nice!

3. Salicylic Acid... Patience.

Most clinics will treat your Verruca with weekly applications of acid or cream. You apply a bandage over it, keep it in place and dry. And repeat each week.

Keeping a bandage dry on your foot while showering is easy (I'm joking).

  • They have to come every week for usually 6-8 weeks.

  • They have to keep there feet dry between appointments

  • The Verruca has a 50%-60% chance of going after all of this.

5. Verrutop... No Pain. No Mess. No Stress.

Verrutop is Nitrizinc Complex (It dries out the verruca). We don't need any needles, we don't need to draw blood and you don't have to keep a bandage dry while showering! I think I mentioned there's no pain? It's a Verruca Removal State Of The Art treatment that leaves Verruca  with nowhere to hide.

This new Verrutop Treatment uses a tried and tested nitrizinc complex to dehydrate the virus in the wart. This leaves no blisters or scarring allowing immediate return to full activity.

In plain language a vile of clear liquid is applied to the verruca and the Verrutop does it's magic by drying it out. You can sometimes see changes straight away. When you go home, the nitrizinc works away in the background. You can expect the verruca to go yellow or sometimes black which is a sign of a good result. The body can then create an immune response and kill off the verruca.
